product description

West Africa 2026/2027 (O 5.2) – Volume 2 H-Z

Content:

French-West Africa, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Togo – including the colonial issues prior to their independence, some of which were issued under different state names.

Description: Nearly 200 new pages packed with details were added to this edition; they offer a first hint at the vast number of novelties these countries have issued over the past seven years. Sierra Leone has already surpassed MiNumber 20,000 – a global record!

Therefore the editorial team faced the challenge of presenting this wealth of issues without jeopardizing both detail and a clear overview and without letting the size of the catalogue spiral out of control.

The consistently poor availability of source material for African collection areas again and again leads to the fact that stamps only become known to the philatelic community and are catalogued years after their actual date of issue. Take the Nigerian stamps with MiNumbers A 848–C 848, for example: Even though they resemble the well-known “Art and Nature” postage stamp series from 2010 at first glance, these newly listed stamps appear to be true rarities.

For such stamps issued directly by postal authorities – rather than produced and marketed by global agencies – the editorial team also faces the challenge of pricing them appropriately. A standard market price often takes time to develop. Particularly regarding exotic issues, each new catalogue edition requires careful monitoring in which direction highly volatile prices will eventually stabilize. Stamps from Senegal that were launched around 1998 are currently in just such a volatile phase. The prices of several previously unremarkable stamps have increased more than tenfold, while the values of other issues, which were expensive in the past, have slightly decreased.

The latest edition of the MICHEL catalogue thus provides valuable guidance – both for collectors acquiring stamps that are rarely on the market and for sellers who do not wish to sell their individual stamps for less than their value.

As is the case with every new edition published in recent years, we have included additional colour illustrations and incorporated a lot of new information regarding the descriptions and assessment of the listed stamps.

All issues we have become aware of by our editorial deadline have been taken into account.
