product description

West Africa 2026 (OC 5.1) - Volume 1 A-G

Content:

Bénin (including Dahomey), Burkina Faso (including Upper Volta), Ivory Coast, French West Africa, Gambia, Ghana (including the Gold Coast), Guinea (including French Guinea), Guinea-Bissau (including Portuguese Guinea).

Description: The addition of over 100 pages is a first indication of the numerous novelties issued in these countries over the past seven years. Guinea, for instance, is on the verge of reaching its MICHEL No. 20,000 – a global record!

Furthermore, the consistently scarce source material frequently results in stamps becoming known to the philatelic community – and therefore having to be included in the cataloguing process – only years after they have actually been issued. The “100 Years of Khilafat Ahmadiyya” stamp issued by Ghana in 2008, which has only now found its way into our catalogue, is one such example.

Such new discoveries also present the editorial team with the challenge of determining the correct price. The market price of newly discovered issues will usually emerge only over time. Particularly in regards to exotic issues, each new catalogue edition requires careful monitoring of the direction in which highly volatile prices will eventually stabilize. In extreme cases, the commercial market may show a price range from €4 to €1,000 for the very same set of stamps.

As we did with every new edition of the catalogue in recent years, we have again added more colour photos and included a lot of new information in the descriptions and appraisals of the listed issues.

All issues known to us prior to the editorial deadline have been taken into account. The systematic cataloguing of the most recent overprints issued by Benin, however, has been made more complicated by a lack of relevant information and reliable reference material. One of our particular editorial responsibilities is to ensure that we don’t unintentionally include forgeries or faux postage stamps in our catalogue.

In this context we want to take this opportunity to expressly ask our readers for their assistance in sharing any discoveries or knowledge they may have regarding the Benin collection area.
