MICHEL Rarities - Stamps you should know

Content:

So you can join the debate: MICHEL introduces issues that are either world-famous, extremely pricey or extraordinary in other aspects.

Now you can join the conversation: MICHEL presents stamps that are world-famous, particularly expensive, or exceptional in some other way.

From 2015 to 2019, we published articles in the MICHEL Review that focused on remarkable stamps. These articles are compiled in this book, “Rarities – Stamps You Should Know,” which is now in its second edition. The individual articles describe selected stamps and attempt to place them in their historical context. Additionally, there are charts showing the value development of the featured stamps since 1950, that is, since the introduction of the Deutsche Mark (DM).

Over 40 of the articles published to date have been compiled in this book and supplemented with several contributions that provide insight into the daily work of the MICHEL editorial team. They reflect the state of knowledge at the time of publication. For this second edition, various articles have been expanded, many value trend charts updated, and a previously unpublished article on the Tbilisi city postmark has been added.

The stamps described here were issued between 1840 and 2018, thus covering the entire history of stamp production. We have also made an effort to cover as many collecting themes as possible, so that collectors with a wide variety of collecting interests can find inspiration here. Stamp collecting is also entertaining, which is why we have included this aspect in our articles.

In selecting the stamps described, we have often drawn on current auction listings. We would therefore like to thank all auction houses for providing images and information from their auction catalogs.
