Reading Old German Scripts + Brochure 2025

Content: German scripts from the 16th Century until today on six tables, accompanied by a booklet with instructions and transcribed sample texts as well as two additional tables for your own script styles: Kurrent, Old German Scripts, Suetterlin Script, Latin Script, Walbaum-Fraktur, Arial

Description: The knowledge of both scripts and types German scripts is the basis for the work or research done by collectors of historical documents, archivists, or anyone interested in genealogy. This overview of old German scripts from the 16th Century to the present day provides a guide that is easily understandable and accessible. It is not intended as a textbook or study guide, but rather as a handy and quick aid when reading old letters, diaries, recipes or documents. Placed next to the document that needs to be deciphered, the individual plates provide a clearly structured orientation for the reader. Plates 1-5 arrange the various scripts side by side, thus allowing for a quick comparison. They serve to identify the script in which the text to be deciphered is written. Usually, a few quick glances will suffice to spot a letter that is hard to read and thus identify the relevant script.

The first column of the table shows the letters of Kurrent, while the second column depicts those of Old German cursive, followed by Sütterlin and Latin cursive. On the far right, the legible modern typeface Arial provides the contrast, making each letter easily identifiable. Walbaum Fraktur, which is predominant in documents that are not handwritten and in old books, completes the overview and expands the areas of application of the plates to include printed documents. Plates 6-10 are each dedicated to one of the five historical scripts and types: Plate 6 Kurrent, Plate 7 Old German cursive, Plate 8 Sütterlin, Plate 9 Latin Cursive, and Plate 10 Fraktur. Once you have identified the script of a text, you will need only one of Plates 6-10 to read it. All letters of a script are listed in alphabetic order. However, please keep in mind that many historical documents combine two or more scripts or types within the same text.
