The standard reference work on studies of Oldenburg postmarks from 1911, “The Postmarks of Oldenburg” by Paul Ohrt, which served as the foundation of this edition, provides a meticulous compilation of information on Oldenburg postmarks. In this edition you will find a tabular presentation which has been sorted alphabetically by post office locations. We have retained Ohrt’s descriptions of the postmark shapes. The information that covers the stamp period of the Grand Duchy up to its end and the available data regarding any later use have been taken into account. The exclaves of the dioceses of Lübeck and Birkenfeld have not been included since they had independent postal systems (Diocese of Lübeck) or were supported by Prussia (Birkenfeld). The replacement stamps (new postmarks, such as single-circle stamps or stamps with three-lined frames, etc.) introduced as of 1868 have not yet been taken into consideration as the data provided in Ohrt’s book still needs to be revised first. We have also incorporated new information about the Oldenburg postmarks, which was obviously not available to Mr. Ohrt (such as several déboursé postmarks as well as other cancellations that have not yet been documented or are less widely spread).
