Description:
Collecting postal stationery continues to be just as popular as ever, as the stable market conditions show. Due to the liquidation of collections, many of which have grown over several decades, collectors’ items that have not been seen in a long time have surfaced. The continued strong demand is reflected in staggering price increases, particularly for top pieces.
As always, the latest research findings provided to our editorial team by working groups, examiners and active collectors have been incorporated in this 24th edition of the MICHEL Postal Stationery Germany.
The section on German States – Württemberg should be emphasized for the continued revision of the cataloging of official postal stationery and postal stationery used by individual authorities, including previously unrecorded subtypes and price increases, some of which are considerable. This section and the section dedicated to the German Empire contain additional information on the earliest known dates these items of postal stationery were used.
A new discovery in the collection area of allied occupation – French Zone (final issues for the purpose of using up residual stamps) after 80 years is particularly noteworthy and adorns the front cover.
Regarding the Federal Republic and West Berlin, newly identified common cliché types of all radio lottery postcards issued from 1952 onwards are featured.
The Deutsche Post has once again issued numerous new stamps. Following the initial introduction of special value cancellations in the spring of 2021 that are identical to new stamps, the value cancellations of the new indefinite series “World of Letters”, introduced at the end of 2021, also have different matrix codes for each version of postal stationery. Several special envelopes issued by postal philately, the initial editions of which erroneously came without a matrix code, are a special feature.
At the beginning of 2024, the option of franking print mailings (“Dialogpost”) with stamps was discontinued, and as a result the corresponding postal stationery was withdrawn from the market.
Regarding the German Postal System’s own issues with official postal stamps, the cataloging has been continued as of the year of 2021, and regarding those that bear the private postal stamps “Deutsche Post” it has been continued from 2020 onwards. Starting in October of 2022, there will be a new format of the individual Deutsche Post postal stamps, using an enlarged matrix code, which will be different for each version of postal stationery. You will find more details pertaining to this in the extended introduction on Page 850. Since the franking of print mailings with postal stamps has been discontinued, the subsequent mailed postal items, which merely bear a motif depicting an image instead of a postal stamp, are no longer considered postal stationery and such items will not be catalogued.
Concerning the private mail issues of Deutsche Post AG, in the freight mail division, parcel stamps that have been designed specifically for the shipment of urns are a new feature; their existence was previously unknown even though this service has been provided since 2015. Due to the discontinuation of said service on September 30th, 2025, and the subsequent withdrawal of these stamps from the market, they will be among the rarest contemporary issues of postal stationery.
